What to Wear for Fall Photos this year: My Top Styling Tips
Is this your first thought once you think about a photoshoot? You’re not alone—styling your family may seem stressful, but I assure you it doesn’t need to be. Here are my top tips for styling your family for your upcoming outdoor fall session.
1. Where to start? Start with Mom
I always recommend using Mom’s outfit as a starting point. This gives you a base to build on, rather than a blank canvas, which can lead to complete overwhelm.
2. Choose a Color Palette
Fall styling is both more fun and slightly trickier. Remember, we’re shooting against a vibrant orange and yellow background. You want your wardrobe to stand out without competing with or blending into the foliage.
My tip is to pick a wardrobe that comprises 3–5 colors or hues. A fail-safe formula I’ve seen work well in front of the camera is to start with a base palette of earthy, neutral tones and include 1–2 accent colors. These pops of color can come from a statement piece or a pattern, and can be repeated in another family member’s outfit.

Remember, your family should look cohesive NOT matching. Think complementing looks instead of identical.
3. Think Beyond Color: Textures, Silhouettes, and Accessories
We often get fixated on finding color combinations and forget to pay attention to other details that can make a difference. Fabric and fit can have a big impact on your overall look. Layering is one of the easiest ways to elevate your look.
Avoid performance materials that cling to your body. Instead, think about adding a suede or leather jacket, or incorporating a fun knit sweater. Flowy dresses and asymmetrical skirts create variation and movement in photos, instantly making them feel less stiff and more interesting.
Pairing a satin skirt with a cashmere sweater can create contrast and visual interest.
Heavyweight fabrics are both flattering and add visual depth
4. Be Cautious When Mixing Patterns, Logos and Bold Colors
While patterns can look great as accents, they can easily make your photos look too busy and distracting. Remember, you want to be the focal point! Avoid stark patterns like pinstripes and high-contrast checks.
5. Dress Comfortably!
Bundle up, especially your little ones. October temperatures can be unpredictable, and rain is frequent around this time of year. Avoid heels, too! The ground can be slippery, so opt for shoes that are both comfortable and stylish.

6. Details Matter
Little things make a big difference! Sometimes in the moment we ignore the little things or assume they can be “edited out” but that isn’t always the truth. Trust me, you don’t want to end up being unhappy with a minuscule detail you don’t like in your gallery. Some quick reminders:
Do iron out the creases and fold lines, I cannot edit those fine lines out
Wear socks that work—yes they will show in your photos!
Empty those pockets so your pants aren’t bulging — I suggest bring a tote for your phone, wallet, car keys
Ditch the smart watch for some intentional accessories that elevate your look
Pay attention to fingernails, get a mani or throw on some press-ons
A Final Thought: Shop Your Closet First!
Before heading out to buy a whole new wardrobe, take a look at what you already own. Pull out a few favorite pieces, experiment with different combinations, and see what you can put together. You might be surprised by how much you already have!
Most importantly, stay true to your personal style. Your photos should feel authentic to you and your family, not like you're dressing up as someone else. My goal is always to help you feel comfortable, confident, and beautiful in front of the camera, so we can create photos that feel like you and that you'll love looking back on for years to come.
